Week 1 – Summer 2014

Before there was Boracay, there was Matabungkay.

This is a beach haven only two to two and a half hours away from Manila.  This is where families troop for a quick and affordable summer weekend getaway.

The white sanded (well, at least on some part) Matabungkay Beach is found in Lian, Batangas.  Lian is just one of the many municipalities of Batangas that is home to beaches.

Aside from LIAN, you can also visit the municipality of SAN JUAN where you can find Laiya Beach; MABINI where you can dive in Anilao and other spots; NASUGBU where most high end resorts are (Canyon Cove and Hamilo Cove); and CALATAGAN where one resort offer wakeboarding.

Of course, there are many other undiscovered and understated Batangas beaches and hopefully next time, I can show them to you.  But this time, it just the good ol’ Matabungkay and its never-ceasing natural wonder.

According to one locale I was talking to, the summer crowd doesn't thin out until the end of May, when parents start paying up children's tuition fee

The following day, I tried to caught the sunrise but was not able to do so. I caught the peaceful waters of Batangas shores though. Twas good enough for my spirit.

Floating raft where you can dine. And bring along to snorkling sites.
Floating raft where you can dine and they can bring you to snorkeling sites.  Or watch sunset from.  Don’t worry, there are some less tacky-looking rafts.  They cost P 1,500.
Before we set out to the sea, we bought some fresh sea food from the wet market. The guy in charge of our raft cook these for us while we went snorkling.

In case, it gets too intense for you, there are floating popsicle sellers to help you beat the heat

Note to self:  buy underwater camera for future snorkeling, diving and other water-related escapade.

And of course,  one of the keys for a great vacation is a comfortable home-away-from home.

Bella Beach

We booked in Bella Beach a little too late.  The owner was accomodating enough to give us  a call in the morning confirming our booking.

Bella Beach is at the far end of the Matanbungkay shoreline.  We prefer this end because it is far from videokes and the rest of the crowd.  The beach is quiet and is perfect for reading books, wading and playing in the water, and speding some quality time with your family or significant other.

The rooms vary in price, form (nipa hut or concrete rooms) and in ventilation (air-conditioned or with electric fan).
